As last week’s Capitol Hill riot proved, Trump supporters have perhaps reached a new level of commitment to a candidate – one that prioritizes political allegiance over the political system.
More traditional Republicans no longer recognize the party they joined so many decades ago. Conspiracy theories and blind devotion to leadership have eroded many of the values the GOP has historically held dear.
After 40 years in Grand Old Party, former Congressman Mickey Edwards said he no longer considers himself a Republican.
“It’s gone. I mean there is no Republican Party anymore that has values, principles, morals, anything,” Edwards said Thursday.
Congressional objections to the November 2020 presidential election were the final straws for many long-term Republicans, who simply could not support the attempt to de-legitimize millions of American voters.
“This has become a cult. It’s no longer a political party. It’s a cult. It’s the kind of a cult that when the leader of the cult does anything, no matter what it is, or how awful it is, they voted,” Edwards said. “They voted to question the election results even after people came into the Capitol, tried to kill them and killed a police officer who was trying to protect them. And they did that.”
Republican Senators Ted Cruz of Texas and Josh Hawley of Missouri, in contrast, voted to reject Biden’s victory last week. History will judge accordingly.
